Author’s Speech at 21-DLD Launch Event

Author’s Speech at 21-DLD launching by Olusola Adeyemo

Mr. Chairman, my distinguished guests and launchers, my daddies and mummies, uncles and aunties, friends, loved ones, all well-wishers, Media reporters, all protocol duly observed, distinguished ladies and gentlemen.

I stand before you this afternoon to thank you for the wonderful response you have accorded the invitation towards the launch of my book 21- Day Leadership Diet”.

No other point in time in the history of our nation Nigeria has there been a greater need for leadership. Leaders are needed not only in public service, but also in churches, families and at individual levels. Just like Plato, the Greek philosopher said, “the first and best victory is to conquer self”.

Some of you may be wondering, what is it about a leadership diet, and why is it being served for 21 days? The idea for 21- DLD (as popularly now called) was born when I had to lead a team of leaders. Having had a very difficult first time experience in leadership myself, I wanted to ensure that these new leaders started their journey on a very strong foot. So, for the next 21 days, I shared with them, 21 leadership tips that have helped me on my own leadership journey. These tips formed the starting ingredients for the full leadership diet that is being served here this afternoon.

I used to think leadership was easy, and came with a lot of privileges until I had my own first leadership experience and saw how tough it could be to be a leader. Indeed I was not prepared for what I met. I had to go through a learning process when I realized that I was not born a leader. Eventually for me, the wise words of the great American football coach Vincent Lombardi rang true – “Leaders are not born they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And that’s the price we’ll have to pay to achieve the goal of leadership, or any goal for that matter.” The book we are dedicating and launching today is a proof and a witness to the fact that truly, we could all learn to lead and in so doing improve the impact we make in our society and the world at large.

This book is for everyone. It is for you, it is for me. It has been written in a simple language, and it is very easy to understand and apply. Its contents are designed to instill confidence to lead in anyone. You and your whole team will benefit greatly from it. It is for everyone in the business of leading and building leaders. Teachers can give their students, CEOs can give their managers, and Church leaders can give their units and departments heads. My dream is to have it in the hands of every young person and all aspiring leaders in Nigeria and beyond. I am glad to let you know that the e-copy is already available on Amazon for worldwide access and reading on portable devices.

Ladies and gentlemen, this afternoon, I want to dedicate this book to the memory of my late mum, Mrs. Rachel Adunola Adeyemo. She was my first leader, teacher and inspiration. She would have been so proud to witness this day, but I am sure she is smiling where she is as part of a cloud of witness seeing this happen today. I also thank my dad, who made our education a top priority and enabled me to be where I am today, daddy thank you. I especially wish to express my gratitude to my spiritual father, Rev Gbeminiyi Eboda. No other person made a leader out of me like he did. He is a father like no other, and the support he gave me made this book a reality today. I want to thank my wife-Toyin (for developing my personal website for the book), with this website, we intend to make leadership resources easily available to all 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round. I want to thank my twin brother and his wife (who always play host to me whenever I am in Ibadan), my elder brother (Egbon mi) and his family, my two other siblings who are currently out of the country- Seyi and Funmi, and all my extended family members who are here this afternoon to celebrate this event with me today. I also thank my illustrator for the book Iyke”, and the publisher DFImpressions Ltd.
